Fall is a beautiful time to experience the Black Hills. Cooler temperatures, changing leaves, fewer summer crowds, and scenic drives make September and early October a wonderful time to explore Mount Rushmore and the surrounding area. Whether you’re planning a weekend getaway or a longer Black Hills vacation, there’s plenty to see and do during the fall season.
1. Take a Fall Scenic Drive
One of the best ways to enjoy fall in the Black Hills is simply to get in the car and explore. Spearfish Canyon is especially popular for fall colors, but beautiful autumn scenery can also be found throughout Custer State Park and along many of the roads surrounding Keystone and Mount Rushmore. Colors vary from year to year, so part of the fun is seeing what you discover along the way.
2. Watch for Wildlife in Custer State Park
Fall is a great time to explore Custer State Park and watch for wildlife. Bison, pronghorn, deer, prairie dogs, and the park’s famous begging burros may all be spotted during a drive through the park. Wildlife Loop Road is a favorite route, especially when you have time to slow down and enjoy the scenery. Always give wildlife plenty of space and never approach or feed the animals.
3. Visit Mount Rushmore with Fewer Crowds
Fall can be a wonderful time to visit Mount Rushmore National Memorial. After the busiest summer weeks have passed, you may find lighter crowds and a more relaxed atmosphere for exploring the grounds, walking the Presidential Trail, and taking in the views. Cooler temperatures can also make walking around the memorial more comfortable, but be sure to bring layers because Black Hills weather can change quickly.
4. Spend a Relaxing Day in Keystone
Fall is a nice time to slow down and enjoy Keystone after the busiest part of summer has passed. Browse the local shops, stop for a meal or a treat, and learn more about the area’s history at the Keystone Historical Museum. Keep in mind that some businesses and attractions may begin reducing their hours later in the season, so it’s a good idea to check ahead before heading out.
5. Hit the Trails in the Cooler Weather
Cooler fall temperatures can make hiking in the Black Hills especially enjoyable. Choose from easy walks and scenic nature trails to more challenging hikes through forests and granite formations. Bring layers, plenty of water, and sturdy shoes, and always check the weather before heading out. Fall weather can change quickly, especially as you get later into the season.
6. Experience the Custer State Park Buffalo Roundup
Each fall, Custer State Park hosts its annual Buffalo Roundup, one of the most memorable events in the Black Hills. Visitors gather to watch cowboys and cowgirls bring the park’s bison herd together as part of the annual herd management process. The event draws large crowds, so plan ahead, arrive early, and check Custer State Park’s current event information before your visit.
